First Lutheran Church and School (Madeline/Cap Haitien)

Madeline is one of the suburbs of Cap-Haitien and is home to one of the larger congregations in the North District. First Lutheran Church in Madeline operates a school (which has been accredited by the government).

Pastoral Care

This congregation is being served by Pastor Eliona Bernard. He and his wife, Lynda, have three sons: Elioth, Bryan, and Theophile.

The School

With an influx of new students in the 2013-14 school year (taking enrollment from 180 to more than 500,) several new buildings were needed for classrooms and facilities to handle all of these students. There is virtually no room for a playground. As with all of the schools in the District, the children receive Catechism instruction in 5th and 6th grades, after which they are confirmed. At every grade level, the children are taught the Lutheran faith, and chapel services are held twice a week.

The Property

The property at Madeline is about 2 acres in size, and it is completely surrounded by a ten foot wall that is topped with razorwire. The gate is guarded by a caretaker, who lives on the grounds with his wife and children. There are two wells, one with bad water (which is used for toilet flushing at the clinic) and one with good water (which is used for drinking). People from the neighborhood regularly come to the well to get water for their own use.

The Church

A new church building was built with the help of a group from North Canton, Ohio.

The Clinic and Women's Vocational Center

The Lutheran Clinic and the Women's Vocational Center are also located at Madeline.
