May/June 2010

Who went?

Pastor Salvhus, Lori, Deb.

Purpose of the Trip

This trip was intended as an opportunity to visit Cap-Haitien with supplies, to teach, and to assist with and assess medical services. As we visited the Madeline complex, our goals included: Pastor Salvhus teaching a "Means of Grace" class to the seminarians; Lori teaching English; and Deb working with the Clinic staff in seeing patients and assessing the lab and the pharmacy.

Summary of the Trip

The trip took place during May and June of 2010.

Pastor Salvhus, Lori, and Deb flew to Cap-Haitien and were met by Lynda. Luggage and supplies (including an EKG machine) arrived safely on a flight the following day. (Pastor Eliona Bernard also returned from a trip to the States.)

Pastor Arvid Salvhus taught a two week class each morning on "The Means of Grace" to the seminary students and church leaders from the five churches in the North District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti. Since Pastor Salvhus could not speak French or Creole, Pastor Bernard translated. The first several days of the class were taught under the mango tree until school was out and a classroom became available.

Lori taught English in the afternoons to most of the same students and some others (who practiced on the computer in the mornings. Rosetta Stone was used, and many learned some computer skills as well as English).

The students learned some hymns in French and several hymns in English which they sang on the last Sunday. After that same service, there was a distribution of shoes (which had arrived that week) to the children.

Deb noted that the Clinic struggles to maintain wages, medication, and morale as a variety of medical crises have afflicted the country. The need continues for hygiene kits, food, clothing, quilts, and shoes.
