Adopt-A-Student “Because of the poverty in Haiti, the only real hope for the children is to get as much education as possible. The schools in the North District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti educate not only the members' children, but many others as well. Teacher salaries are very low, so it is vital they are paid regularly and on time. LMA's Adopt-a-Student program not only pays for the education of the one child adopted, but because this money helps pay the teachers' salaries, it benefits the whole school.” – Lori Salvhus, LMA President |

Thank you for your interest in Lutheran Mission Association's Adopt-A-Student Program! Adopt-A-Student was started to help financially struggling primary schools in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti. Currently, LMA is working with four of these schools in the North District (Madeline, Gloria Dei, Dondon, and St. Raphael) which together serve approximately 300 students. The cost for one student to attend one of these schools is estimated at $250 USD per year. Without assistance, most families would not be able to afford to pay this amount in order to send their children to school. (In Haiti, the annual per capita income was recently estimated at $1300 USD.) Many would find it a struggle simply to be able to purchase a school uniform (as mandated for students by Haiti's government). The schools' financial shortfalls have largely been borne by their teachers. The teachers agree to work for a very low salary, and many of them continue in their duties - even when money is not available for their wages. The possibility always exists that the teachers could leave to find employment that provides a steadier paycheck. How can you help? There are three ways that you can help. One of the most important things that you can do to help is to spread the word about our Adopt-A-Student program. • Tell others about LMA and ask them to visit our Adopt-A-Student webpage. If you know of someone who is looking to donate to a worthwhile cause, send them in our direction. • Visit our "Support LMA" page for Adopt-A-Student announcements and inserts for church bulletins and newsletters. • If you are a Facebook user, please click the "like" button below to "like" this page and share it with your friends. Secondly, any financial contribution that you would be able to make to the Adopt-A-Student Program would be greatly appreciated. Your donation is used exclusively for student uniforms, teacher salaries, school supplies, school building expenses, and other school-related expenses. If you choose to participate at the full sponsorship level of $250 (the cost of one child for one school year), LMA will send you a photograph of a student from one of the North District schools. We will also include you on our list to receive our newsletter in the mail when they are available. (To sign-up, you may print and send us the sponsor form which is available here on the site as a PDF download for your convenience.) We thank and praise God that, currently, we have received 30 full sponsor donations for the 2010-11 school year! Finally and most importantly, we ask you to pray regularly for the teachers and students at our Madeline, Gloria Dei, Dondon, and St. Raphael schools. In their desperate situation, it can be very easy to feel alone and forgotten. If you have any questions about Lutheran Mission Association's Adopt-A-Student Program, please do not hesitate to send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you, and thank you for your time and consideration. Your help makes all the difference in the lives of these children in Haiti! Your support gives these children a safe place where they can continue to learn about Jesus and grow in the Christian faith as they are prepared to face life in the difficult situation of their fourth world country.
